Dzogchen practice manual of Gyalwa Chatri

Dear friends,

since 2014, we have been honored to organize every year a 6 day teaching of one of the greatest living masters in Yungdrung Bon tradition, Tsangpa Tenzin Rinpoche, the head teacher of Triten Norbutse monastery. This year, as it was the last year, the teaching will take place online, and the dates have been set for June 1 - 6.

Ponlop Rinpoche has based his teaching on the Dzogchen practice manual of Gyalwa Chatri and has continued  with the text throughout all these years. This time, he will focus on the instruction for the Bardo contained in the fifth chapter.

About the teaching:

Bardo, the intermediate state between death and rebirth, offers a unique opportunity, to an experienced practitioner, to get full and irreversible realization while dying, or at least to obtain a better condition for the following existence. The knowledge shared by the manual and transmitted by masters who practiced the instructions themselves has helped practitioners of many generations to overcome fear of dying and to use death as a tool for awakening from ignorance.

Gyalwa Chaktri is one of the most highly valued and treasured texts in Yungdrung Bon Tradition and belongs to the Dzogchen cycle of Zhang Zhung Nyen Gyud, The Oral Transmission of Zhang Zhung. Its author, the thirteen century master Dru Gyalwa Yungdrung,  conceived it  as an instructional Dzogchen manual, a step by step guide for implementing the Dzogchen teaching into an individual spiritual path.

The text is widely used by Bonpo masters and European students are quite familiar with it. In the last year, the year of the pandemic, Khenpo Gelek has been teaching from Gyalwa Chaktri during his daily sessions, covering the first and the second chapters which explain the preliminary and main practices of Dzogchen. The chapter 5, to which we arrive now,  is dedicated to the integration of the three doors, the body, speech and mind, into the practice.

About the teacher:

Pönlob Tsangpa Tenzin Rinpoche was born in 1970 in Tibet and received ordination from Yongdzin Lopön Tenzin Namdak Rinpoche in 1986. In 1992, Pönlob Rinpoche entered Menri Monastery in Dolanji, India, where he studied for nine years. Then he followed Yongdzin Rinpoche to Nepal and continued his studies at the Yungdrung Bön Academy at Triten Norbutse Monastery in Kathmandu. In 2001, upon successful completion of his studies, Pönlob Rinpoche was one of the first six Geshes to graduate from Triten Norbutse Monastery. In 2004, he was appointed and enthroned as Pönlop (head teacher) of Triten Norbutse.

The first time that Ponlop Rinpoche came to teach at Shenten Dargye Ling was only in 2014. He has immediately gained great respect, devotion and admiration of the western students who appraise his extraordinary ability to explain the teaching clearly and always with regard to the life of a practitioner. He is also admired for his exemplary life and his dedication to the many duties of the main teacher in the monastery.

Schedule

of the retreat: (referring to Paris time)

• 08.00 - 09.30: Sangchöd and meditation with Shenten's lamas

• 15.00 - 17.00: Teachings by Ponlop Rinpoche

• 20.00 - 21.15: Meditation followed by chöd practice with Shenten's lama

The teaching will be in Tibetan, translated by Khenpo Gelek in English. From English, the translation will be available in French, Spanish, German, Italian, Hungarian and Russian languages.

Contribution for the teachings:

The participation's fee (offering) is 60 EUR. We think that such a contribution is affordable for most of the people and necessary to appreciate the teachings, maintain Shenten and repay our masters' generosity. However, we are aware that there might be some sincere and dedicated practitioners with financial difficulties who wish to participate and cannot afford it. If this is your case, please write to us at contact@shenten.org - and put the name of the retreat in the subject.

If you cannot participate in the LIVE sessions, you can watch the recordings (in English) later.  They will be available as soon as possible, often the same day in the evening, or in the following days.

How to pay:

ZOOM does not allow any other payment option than through PayPal. We rely on the automatic registration process because other ways require much more work. To those who do not want to or cannot pay through PayPal for any reason (but it is very easy to create an account there) we suggest you use a friend’s account (but please put your own email address, to get the link for streaming). In some countries, Paypal does offer a simple bank card payment without creating an account (you will be given the option when you proceed to the payment). If you cannot follow the suggested options and still want to take part, we will register you manually upon your payment through the bank transfer.
