Summer retreat with practice and teaching on Dzogchen
The summer retreat 2019
Yetri Thasel or Removing the Extremes of the Primordial Mind
Every year in the summer, a three-week long retreat, dedicated to the teaching of Dzogchen, the Great Perfection, takes place at Shenten Dargye Ling. This year, teaching will be on an important part of the cycle of Yetri Thasel or Removing the Extremes of the Primordial Mind, called The Chapter of Instruction on the Base.
The Chapter of Instruction on the Base is an essential commentary of the core texts of the Yetri Thasel cycle, that was composed in the 8th century by Lachen Drenpa Namkha, an iconic figure of Yungdrung Bön. This concise text gives complete teaching on Dzogchen practices, both Trekchö and Thögal. Shardza Rinpoche, the renowned 20th century master who attained the rainbow body, based his famous work the Heart Drops of Dharmakaya mainly on this text.
Yetri Thasel is one of the main Bön Dzogchen cycles. Also called The Indian cycle, it is well known for having both male and female lineages. Unlike the other dzogchen cycles in Bön tradition, it is divided into three categories: semde (regarding the mind), longde (regarding the space) and mengagde (quintessential instructions). The Chapter of Instruction on the Base is in the section of quintessential instructions.
Yongdzin Tenzin Namdak Rinpoche, the most senior living master in Yungdrung Bön tradition and the founder of Shenten Dargye Ling, accompanied by Khenpo Tenpa Yundrung Rinpoche, abbot of the monastery of Triten Norbutse in Nepal, has taught extensively, for many years, from all the main Bön Dzogchen cycles at Shenten Dargye Ling. Namely from Zhang-Zhung Nyen Gyü, Drakpa Khorsum, Yetri Thasel and Seme Degu (Atri). Dzogchen, or Great Perfection, is considered to be the most effective and profound teaching on liberation of the mind into its primordial, non-conceptual state.
During the summer retreat, teachings will be held by two of the closest disciples of Yongdzin Rinpoche, Khenpo Tenpa Yundrung Rinpoche and Khenpo Gelek Jinpa, abbot of Shenten Dargye Ling. Both of them are lineage holders of all the Dzogchen Cycles transmitted in Yungdrung Bön and they present Dzogchen teaching in a pure, traditional form, and in precise and clear manner understandable to the western students.
The morning session of the teaching will be undertaken by Khenpo Tenpa Yungdrung Rinpoche, while Khenpo Gelek Jinpa will take on the afternoon´s session. Beside the teaching, the retreat includes three group meditation sessions per day in the presence of the teachers who are also highly experienced meditators.
Sanchöd or the ritual of smoke offering and prayers are performed every morning, surchöd or burnt food offering is done each afternoon at five o´clock and chöd or symbolical body offering is chanted and played with drums and bells after each evening meditation.
The retreat is open to newcomers as well. The teaching will develop progressively from basic explanations to the main practice of Dzogchen, and beginners will be supported and guided by the teachers and other more experienced practitioners. At the same time, the retreat is suitable also for those who already attended other teachings about Dzogchen and have experience of Dzogchen meditation. It would be better to attend the retreat from the beginning to the end, but this is not compulsory. Every participant can come and leave at any time, according to their possibilities.
Khenpo Tenpa Yungdrung Rinpoche: “Traditionally, we receive many teachings from many teachers and it is considered very useful to do so. First, because partial views or personal interpretations of different masters might be corrected in this way, second, because we understand teaching more deeply with growing experience of meditators. Thereby, I heartfully invite everybody to attend the retreat and take benefit.”
