Dzogchen meditation retreat

according to Zhang-Zhung Nyamgyü

For the past few years, a week-long retreat held at Shenten Dargye Ling at the end of August has been devised as practice based. This format has attracted many participants keen to deepen their experience of Dzogchen meditation under the guidance of knowledgeable and experienced Tibetan masters.

Dzogchen, which means the Great Perfection, is traditionally considered to be the most profound and effective vehicle to liberate the mind from its dualistic grasping into its original pure state. The teaching of Dzogchen is understandable to all people who are ready for spiritual development, independently of their cultural background.

This year, the teaching of the retreat will follow Nyamgyü Dringpo or Medium version of Experiential Transmission of Zhang-Zhung Nyengyü, the most precious cycle of Dzogchen teaching in the spiritual tradition of Yungdrung Bön. Its lineage of transmission has been unbroken until now.

The corpus of teaching of Zhang-Zhung Nyengyü is classified in Kagyü and Nyamgyü. While Kagyü contains canonical words of transmission, Nyamgyü – which has an extensive, medium and short version – transmits core instructions of the lineage masters of the cycle based on their practice of Dzogchen, including the 24 masters of oral transmission who all attained the supreme realization.

Tapihritsa, the 25th master of the unbroken lineage of Zhang-Zhung Nyengyü, is a key figure of Yungdrung Bön. Depicted as naked and without any ornament, he has become an emblem of the common man who can reach the complete awakening by following the instructions of their teachers and putting them into practice.

Yongdzin Tenzin Namdak Rinpoche, founder of Shenten Dargye Ling and the most senior master of the Yungdrung Bön tradition, who is venerated and loved by thousands of western students, graciously offered teachings on the complete Zhang-Zhung Nyen Gyü in different occasions at Shenten and before the center was founded in 2005. Rinpoche always emphasizes the importance of the practice as well as proper understanding of the teaching based on one´s experience.

Everybody is therefore welcome to attend this retreat and follow Rinpoche´s recommendations. The teaching will be carried out by two of his closest disciples, Khenpo Tenpa Yungdrung Rinpoche and Khenpo Gelek Jinpa.

The teaching sessions of this retreat are reduced to one hour in the morning and two hours in the afternoon and opportunities to ask questions and answers will be given. The day schedule includes four meditation sessions.

Besides that, four daily rituals will be performed every day, in accordance with the traditional program of meditation schools in the monasteries: a smoke offering (sangchöd) in the early morning, water offering (chutor) in the late morning, burnt food offering (surchöd) at 5pm, and symbolic body offering (chöd), at 9 pm.

The retreat is open to newcomers as well. They will be supported by the teachers and other more experienced practitioners throughout the retreat.
